Schools Top 20 – 23 July 2019

IN THE SPOTLIGHT: Rugby365‘s Schools Top 20 turned 20 this year, and it’s doing something it has not done before.

The strange decision is that a team which lost on Saturday be promoted.

Outeniqua, who are on the fringes of the Top 20, played Paarl Gim who are ranked second only to Grey Bloem on the Top 20, and came within an ace of beating Gimmies. The score was 11-8, a try apiece. Reports suggest that it was a match that the Kwaggas could well have won.

Outeniqua have played 11 matches this year, six of them against Top 20 sides. Their five defeats have been against Top 20 sides – Grey Bloem, Paarl Gim, Paarl Boys’ High, Garsfontein and Affies, all five in the top 8. They, in turn, beat Stellenberg who are ranked ninth. Grey Bloem gave them a hiding; otherwise, their biggest defeat was by eight points against Boys’ High.

When Outeniqua lost to Affies, it was by seven points. Waterkloof ranked 20th lost by 18 points to Affies and 36 points to Garsfontein who beat Outeniqua by four points.

There are two surprise victories – Jeppe’s over KES who had beaten them well at Jeppe in the earlier match this year and Wynberg’s victory over Rondebosch who had beaten them at home in the second term.

Those who have come down a peg or two are Grey High and Rondebosch.

Some schools which are no longer playing this year, have come off the pressure group but Jeppe have come onto it.
