Bristol edge out the Dragons

Jason Strange boots Welsh into touch

Former Newport man Jason Strange kicked his old team into touch as Bristol put one foot into the European Challenge Cup quarter-finals with a win over the Dragons in Bristol on Friday.

Strange kicked a penalty goal in both halves as the Guinness Premiership leaders edged the Dragons 11-7 in a rugged match at the Memorial Stadium, and the pool winners will be decided in the return match at Rodney Parade in January.

Bristol backrower Dan Ward-Smith bagged the only try of the first half, but home fans had a few nervous moments when in-form Dragons winger Aled Brew scored in the second half and Ceri Sweeney's conversion made it a one-point match.

Glasgow got their European campaign back on track with a thumping 69-7 victory over Italians GRAN Parma at Hughenden.

Still smarting from last weekend's 28-23 loss at Saracens, Glasgow jogged to a 24-0 lead in the first quarter and never looked back.

Former rugby league winger Hefin O'Hare crossed for tries in the eighth and 10 minutes, and centre Andrew Henderson's effort had the Italians looking forward to the flight home.

O'Hare completed his hat-trick in the 35th minute, and with Scotland international Dan Parks kicking goals from all angles, the home side led 31-7 at half-time, with a Jason Tiatia try the only thing Parma had to shout about.

Graeme Morrison and Rory Lamont scored tries to keep the scoreboard ticking over in the second spell, with scrum-half Sam Pinder bagging a quick-fire double and Steve Swindall and Canadian prop Kevin Tkachuk completing the rout.

In Italy, Viadana beat French minnows Albi 26-13, with former Scotland international Calvin Howarth kicking 16 points.

Albi outside-half Andre Hough kicked three goals, including the conversion of centre Thomas Sanchou's try, to give his side a surprise 13-10 lead at the break.

But opposite number Howarth slotted four second-half goals to give his side the victory.
