AUDIO: How Griquas avoided dropping into the 'big hole'
LISTEN as Griquas head coach Pieter Bergh explains the reasoning for making several second-half changes during his side’s 42-21 Currie Cup victory over the Bulls.
The victory elevated the Kimberley-based outfit to third place on the Currie Cup table.
They now have a date against the log-leading Cheetahs in Bloemfontein this Friday, in which victory can potentially seal a play-off spot with one round to go.
Bergh emptied his bench between the 47th and 59th minutes of the match and explained the reasoning behind his decision.
The article continues below…
“We went to our bench early in the second half, earlier than we normally would.
“We felt that we earned the right to bring our bench on early. We have a short turnaround playing the Cheetahs on Friday.
“We will get on the bus tonight [Sunday] back to Kimberley and arrive around 2.00 on Monday morning.
“So it was important for us to get some players off the field early. We replaced eight of our best players with 30 minutes to go, which is a good thing with the short turnaround.
“We lost some momentum, despite still dominating territory. We made a lot of errors, and that just comes down to the number of changes made.
“Overall, five points in the bag away from home is something we’ll take gladly.”
