AUDIO - Pieter Bergh: 'Nobody thought we would be in this position'
REACTION: Listen as Griquas head coach Pieter Bergh explains the way forward as they head into the Currie Cup play-offs.
Bergh’s Griquas went down to a star-studded Lions side at Ellis Park in Round Seven of the Currie Cup by 7-37.
Griquas entered the final round of the tournament as log leaders, but the loss saw them drop to second place on the table.
They will host a semifinal against the Cheetahs at Griqua Park.
Should Griquas see off their neighbours and the Lions defeat the Cavaliers, Bergh’s men will have to take the trip up to Johannesburg once again for the Final.
Bergh explained what his side’s focus will be heading into the play-offs and that they’ll take the learnings from the loss to the Lions, should they possibly meet again in the Final.
The article continues below…
“We should focus on not losing confidence from this [loss]. I’m very proud of this team, I have to say that.
“When we got a hiding playing against the Pumas in week one, nobody thought we would be in this position.
“I’m proud of how the players stuck together and fought. Now we get to play at home against the Cheetahs in a semifinal.
“After one week in a short tournament, no one thought that would be possible, so I’m very proud of these players.
“I’ll focus on the positives this week. If we have to come back here [to Ellis Park], we will do a proper review on what we need to do better if we’re in this position again.
“Maybe it was good for us to get a reset and just go again.
“Obviously, playing at home in different conditions, I don’t know if the hour wait [due to inclement weather] before kick-off played a role, but it was the same for both teams.
“There are no excuses. They were better than us today [Saturday].”
