Bulls unleash six Junior Springbok world champions for Lions derby
TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: The Bulls’ Currie Cup campaign is in need of an urgent turnaround after two successive defeats and have been boosted by the return of six Junior Springboks from South Africa’s World Rugby U20 Championship-winning squad for Saturday’s Jukskei derby against the Lions.
Siphosethu Mnebelele, Kebotile Maake, Heinrich Theron, Hendre Schoeman, Aka Boqwane and Thomas Beling all return to Bulls colours after helping the Junior Springboks lift the U20 World Championship trophy, adding youthful energy and a winning mentality to a side desperate to get its campaign back on track.
The match will also provide a first Currie Cup opportunity for seven players, with Maake, Theron, Schoeman and winger Lindsey Jansen named in the starting XV, while Johnathan Eloff, Boqwane and Lavela Pongolo are included among the replacements.
Experienced lock Nicolaas Janse van Rensburg has been handed the captaincy and will lead a side combining established campaigners with a wave of young talent. He partners Sintu Manjezi in the second row, while world champion Beling starts at No 8 alongside Maake and Theron in the loose trio.
The Junior Springbok influence continues in the backline, with Hendre Schoeman starting at scrumhalf alongside flyhalf Keagan Johannes. Jansen takes his place on the wing, while Devon Williams provides experience at fullback.
The Bulls XV will hope the injection of their newly crowned world champions can provide the spark they have been missing after defeats in their opening two matches. The return of six members of the title-winning Junior Springbok squad gives them both fresh energy and players arriving with a winning habit.
With local bragging rights and crucial Currie Cup points on the line at the University of Johannesburg, the Jukskei derby offers a significant opportunity for the Bulls’ next generation to make their mark.
