Lions suffer big blow ahead of Currie Cup Final
INJURY UPDATE: The Lions have lost their captain for the Currie Cup Final and the opening period of the United Rugby Championship.
Hooker PJ Botha injured his knee in the Lions’ 67-19 Currie Cup semifinal win over the Boland Cavaliers.
Botha underwent a knee operation on Wednesday and has been ruled out of action for four months.
He could make his return the earliest in the Challenge Cup against Perpignan (January 17) or the week after in the URC against Ospreys on January 23 (both away).
Alternatively, should the Lions opt to wrap him in cotton wool, he could return for a home fixture against the Bulls on January 31.
The Lions are relatively okay with hooker stocks heading into the URC season, with regular captain Jaco Visagie, Morne Brandon and Franco Marais all available for the upcoming season.
