'New' flyhalf as Cheetahs make wholesale changes
TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: The Cheetahs have made several changes for their Currie Cup semifinal showdown against the Pumas at Toyota Stadium in Bloemfontein.
The Free Staters remain one of the competition’s most experienced playoff outfits. Over the past five Currie Cup seasons, the Cheetahs have been regular semifinalists and tasted championship success in 2023, when they beat the Pumas 25-17 in Bloemfontein to clinch the Currie Cup.
The Pumas won semifinals in both 2022 and 2023 and advanced to consecutive finals, including their triumph in 2022 when they defeated the Griquas in Kimberley.
Interestingly, recent history between the teams generally favours the Cheetahs. Before last weekend’s result, the Free Staters had won four of the previous five meetings between the sides, with last weekend’s big win at Mbombela Stadium snapping a four-game losing run.
In terms of the team, Jaco van der Walt comes in at flyhalf and partners Faf de Klerk at halfback.
Cohan Jasper replaces Clayton Blommetjies at fullback, while Zander du Plessis gets a start in the midfield.
In the pack, there is a new front row of Frankie Dos Reis, Marko Janse van Rensburg and Tebogo Nkosi.
Victor Sekekete is promoted from the bench and partners Carl Wegner in the second row.
There are also changes to the loose trio, which consists of captain Neels Volschenk, Simon Miller and Ramon Uys.
