Back to the drawing board for Kings

The Kings will be left scratching their heads on how to improve after suffering back-to-back defeats in the opening two rounds of the Currie Cup.

The Kings, on their return to the Currie Cup, suffered a humiliating 60-19 loss to the Lions at Ellis Park on Saturday.

This comes after losing in the First round against Western Province, at home.

For coach Carlos Spencer there is a lot of thinking to be done as he tries to reassess where his team is in comparison to the opposition.

"We are going to have to rebuild on Monday and have a good look at the game again," Spencer said.

"We will asses from there and try to figure out how we go forward.

"There are a few things we need to have a look at, but we will go back on Monday and have another look, then move on.

"Hopefully the boys can stay positive and keep going

One glaring problem for the coach was the poor line-outs that have haunted the men from Port Elizabeth since the beginning of the competition.

We struggled again with line-outs, especially in good, attacking areas," the coach continued.

"We had a couple opportunities to win ball and put pressure on them but we just couldn't secure our own ball.

"We just did not starve them enough with possession, we tried to keep the ball away from them as much as possible but when they got their opportunities they played, they offloaded and made it count."

In contrast to the Kings players, the Lions look hungry to play and are full of fire; Spencer noted that his teams attitude when the chips were down was not good enough.

"They [the Lions] had their tails up and they kept playing," Spencer said of his opposition.

"While our individual attitude let us down, especially on defense and one-on-one tackles, we also lacked a lot of urgency. "

The Kings next play the struggling Blue Bulls at Loftus and will hope that they are able to capitalise on their fellow basement-dwellers poor form.
