Bulls back odd call
Blue Bulls coach Frans Ludeke has come out in support of referee Marius van der Westhuizen's puzzling late penalty against the Lions.
The Lions were shock losers in Pretoria after the Bulls seem to be a team struggling in the competition so far while Johan Ackermann and his men were a team on form.
However, the win against one of the more fancied teams in the competition seems to have Ludeke's men back on the right track.
This is despite a controversial call, one of a few over the weekend, that halted the Lions comeback.
The Lions were penalised in the 79th minute at scrum time in a situation where they seemed to be dominating proceedings.
This led to the Lions' coach questioning the referee who pinned his team in a dominant scrum.
"The scrums were a huge battle and there were problems with the binding and hinging of both packs.
"I thought all the decisions were accurate and both packs got penalised," Ludeke said.
He said the Bulls were turning the corner after losing three of their first four games.
"I felt the gain-line and collisions were better in this match than in any other game and that's why we got rewarded.
"The Lions like to counter-attack from broken field, they like to move the ball around from deep.
"That's their strength, but our first-time tackling was great and if you can defuse that then you get a lot of energy from that."
The Bulls have given themselves a chance in the competition after two good home wins, and with their tougher fixtures out of the way there is still a firm chance for the Bulls to make the semifinals.
