Catrakilis keen to provide

The new brand of Western Province rugby has got Demetri Catrakilis excited as he looks to become the team's attacking provider.

Much has been made of Province's departure from their classical defensive game plan with an unpredictable attacking edge becoming prominent.

Western Province sit tied on the top of the Currie Cup table with the Golden lions, this weekends opponents, only above them on points difference.

Province have managed to score 10 tries in two games while only conceding 33 points with the men from the Cape looking strong favourites.

With the likes of the Springbok Sevens speedsters Cheslin Kolbe and Seabelo Senatla in the back-three along with the elusive Juan de Jongh in the centres it is no wonder the flyhalf, Catrakilis, is excited to shift the ball wide.

"I am really enjoying the new game plan," Catrakilis said from Newlands on Wednesday.

"We are getting the balance right, kicking when need be but also getting the ball wide quickly when it is on.

"It's exciting getting the ball to those guys [Senatla and Kolbe], I probably enjoy seeing the ball in their handsmore than you guys do!"

Catrakilis is renowned for his kicking prowess and has often been touted as a traditional kick-and-chase flyhalf.

However, he has said little has changed in game play as he adjusts to what the team requires.

"I wouldn't say I have had to change too much in my play," he added.

"If the coach wants me to run the ball more then I run it, or send it out wide.

"It is really an exciting time – there is a lot of unpredictable things happening on the field and the fans seem to be enjoying that."

Catrakilis is starting to become and old head on the scene having played for the Kings and the Stormers at Super Rugby level and now into his fourth season of Currie Cup.

This weekend he is up against the little-known Lions' young flyhalf, Jaco van der Walt.

When asked what he was expecting from his opposite number Catrakilis revelled that he was an unknown entity.

"I don't know much about him except that he is young and blonde!" the flyhalf said.

"However, if he is good enough to play at Currie Cup level, then he must be a good player.

The Golden Lions travel to Newlands on Saturday in a top of the table clash and although the Lions may be the favourites Province will be hopeful for some home-ground advantage,
