Star Junior Bok on Lions bench

TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: The Lions have named star Junior Bok centre Wandisile Simelane on their bench for their opening 2018 Currie Cup game against Griquas on Friday.

Simelane, who represented the Junior Boks at the last two Under-20 World Championships, will make his Currie Cup debut when he runs on the field.

The Lions also have the luxury of naming Springboks Ross Cronje, Andries Coetzee, Marvin Orie and Courtnall Skosan in their starting XV.

Cronje will captain the team from the scrumhalf position.

Coetzee will start at fullback, while Orie, who was on the bench during the Boks’ opening Rugby Championship game against Argentina in Durban, will start in the No.5 jersey.

Skosan will start in the No.11 jersey.

Cyle Brink, Dylan Smith and Robbie Coetzee are all currently injured and are only expected back on the playing field in 2019.

Brink underwent surgery last week after picking up a knee injury in Bok training and he is expected to be on the sidelines for six months.

Scrumhalf Nic Groom is expected to return in October from his injury lay-off.

Griquas opened their 2018 Currie Cup season with a 19-42 loss to the Pumas in Nelspruit in Round One.
