Ikey heading to Kimberley

University of Cape Town flyhalf Dean Grant may feature in the Currie Cup after signing a trial contract with the Griquas.

The 25-year-old student was instrumental to the Ikeys winning their second ever Varsity Cup title against Pukke in Potchefstroom  in one of the greatest ever rugby come-backs.

Grant is one of three trialists at the Griquas with fullback / wing Craig Barry from Maties, and center Quinton Crocker – who played for the Sharks in the Vodacom Cup – also looking to cement a place in Kimberley.

"Dean and the rest of them are all here for a trial," Griquas coach Hawies Fourie said.

"The guys that did duty for us in the last qualifier game against the SWD eagles will sit out so that we can see what the new guys have to offer.

"We will play a warm-up game against the Leopards where the trialists and other fringe players will start."

Fourie, who was Naka Drotske's assistant coach for the Super Rugby season, believes his team have enough depth to compete in this years expanded Currie Cup season.

Our focus now is the Currie Cup after being promoted. We should do well with the depth we have as we aim to at least be in the top six," he added.

The Griquas take on the Sharks on August 9 in Kimberley for their first encounter of the 2014 season.
