Kriel captains the Lions

By
Tuesday 28 Jul 2015

Jaco Kriel will lead a Golden Lions 29-man squad travelling to Pietermaritzburg for a warm-up match against the Sharks on Friday, July 31.

Kriel, who many believe should be involved with the Springboks, has been handed the captains arm-band for the Currie Cup warm-up match at Woodburn stadium in the KwaZulu Natal midlands.

Elton Jantjies, Lionel Mapoe, Warren Whiteley, and Franco Mostert are still in the Springbok set-up and in contention for a World Cup spot. Therefore they are not considered for the Lions at present.

Jantjies however is heading to Japan after the World Cup and will not be part of the Lions Currie Cup campaign, as will Lionel Mapoe and Warwick Tecklenburg who have all signed agreements in Japan until February 2016.

Hooker Armand van der Merwe has signed a deal with Racing Metro, which will see him play in France for the remainder of the 2015 season.

Jantjies, Van der Merwe, Mapoe and Tecklenburg will all return to the Lions for the 2016 Super Rugby season.

Francois De Klerk, who is also with the Boks, will return to the Pumas for Currie Cup if not selected in the final Springbok squad. De Klerk though has signed a permanent deal with the Lions commencing in November 2015.

Marnitz Boshoff, Ruan Combrinck, Harold Vorster, and Malcolm Marx are some headline names in the squad, while Lions coach Johan Ackerman's son Justin Ackerman will be with the team as well.

Robbie Coetzee (hamstring) and Andries Coetzee (foot) are injured and unavailable for selection, while Derick Minnie (knee) is out for the season.

The travelling Golden Lions squad:

Justin Ackerman, Fabian Booysen, Marnitz Boshoff, Ruan Combrinck, Ross Cronje, Stephan de Wit, Ruan Dreyer, Lourens Erasmus, Stokkies Hanekom, Alwyn Hollenbach, Lohan Jacobs, Jaco Kriel (captain), Ruaan Lerm, MB Lusaseni, Malcolm Marx, Sampie Mastriet, Howard Mnisi, Martin Muller, Jacques Nel, Mark Pretorius, Julian Redelinghuys, Ricky Schroeder, Courtnall Skosan, Albertus 'Kwagga' Smith, Jaco van der Walt, Jacques van Rooyen, Anthony Volmink, Harold Vorster, Vainon Willis.
