Jaco van der Walt, who played often at fullback this season, was used as the starting flyhalf in the semifinal loss to Currie Cup champions Western Province.

Van der Walt, who came through the age-group system at Ellis Park, played more than 50 games for the senior team in domestic and Super Rugby competitions.

In contrast, the Lions acquired the services of Griquas scrumhalf Christiaan Meyer on loan for the 2018 Super Rugby season.

The Lions said more acquisitions will be announced in the coming weeks.

The players who have come to the end of their contract with the Lions: Andre Smit, Bader Pretorius, Barend Smith, Curtis Jonas, Divan Henning, Fabian Booysen, Gerdus van der Walt, Gideon Botha, Jaco van der Walt, Jacobus Tredoux, Jean-Pierre du Preez, Le Roux Baard, Lincoln Daniels, MC de Jongh, Morney Moos, Rhyno Potgieter, Ruan Venter, Wihan Jacobs.
