Pollard suffers injury setback
Bulls flyhalf Handré Pollard could miss the start of the Currie Cup after suffering an injury during a training session on Tuesday.
The IRB Junior World Championship-winning Baby Bok pivot has been ruled out for four to six weeks due to an AC joint injury and will be in a race against time with the competition set to begin in five weeks’ time.
Pollard played an integral role in South Africa’s triumphant IRB Junior World Championship campaign on home soil last year but endured a frustrating campaign in France this year.
He alternated between flyhalf and inside centre, where he spent most of the Varsity Cup season, and struggled with his goal-kicking.
While it is uncertain whether he will recover in time for the Blue Bulls’ first-round clash with Western Province at Newlands, what is certain is that he will get an extended run in the No.10 jersey upon his return.
The Blue Bulls will lack depth at flyhalf with Morné Steyn leaving for France after the Super Rugby season and Louis Fouché sidelined for six months.
As a result, Tony Jantjies or Willie du Plessis could be thrust into the starting XV in the opening rounds of the competition.
