Van Jaarsveld gets the armband

Torsten van Jaarsveld has been named the Cheetahs captain for the Currie Cup season after returning from a serious knee injury in the Super Rugby tournament.

The Cheetahs have had a poor Super Rugby season, finishing 14th out of 15, especially when considering last years heroics.

They will be looking to pick up some momentum in the Currie Cup season with a new coaching staff in Rory Duncan (head coach), Franco Smith (backline coach) and Os du Randt (forwards coach) with Naka Drotske heading overseas to learn new coaching techniques.

Van Jaarsveld has the advantage of being able to play both flank and hooker and with Adriaan Strauss expected to be on duty for the Springboks the Cheetahs have had to look else where for a captain.

The 27-year-old replaces former Currie Cup captain Johannes Prinsloo – who was a stand out player in this years Super Rugby campaign

The Cheetahs start their Currie Cup campaign away to the Pumas in Nelspruit on August 9.
