VIDEO: Province coach's bizarre response to media

WATCH as Western Province coach Jerome Paarwater gives some oddball responses to media questions ahead of their Currie Cup encounter with the Cheetahs.

Paarwater was fronting up to the media ahead of the Round Nine Currie Cup encounter, when he was asked about the absence of the Cheetahs’ star flyhalf Siyabonga Masuku, who has been ruled out as a result of cold and flu symptoms.

However, they have in Reinhardt Fortuin an accomplished replacement.

Asked about the guidance that two-time World Cup-winning Springbok Frans Steyn and 88-times capped Bok veteran Ruan will provide Fortuin, the WP coach decided to go off-script.

“We also have Juan de Jongh,” was Paarwater’s abrupt retort to a question – referring to the 19-times capped veteran Bok.

Asked if he feels the outside centre will be able to contain the inside centre, his response was evasive.

“What do you think,” he asked @rugby365com.

Asked if De Jongh has two World Cup winner’s medals, he responded: “Yes. That’s why I say, we are happy with that”

* For the record: While De Jongh featured in the 2011 World Cup, he has not been part of a winning campaign at the global showpiece.

Paarwater also continued with the theme that most 50-50 calls have been going against his team this season.

“That’s why last week, after the game, I made it clear I am going to cite Bismarck [du Plessis],” he said of the veteran Bulls and Bok hooker, who was subsequently banned for three weeks for striking WP lock Ben-Jason Dixon.

“At the time the score was 24-22 [in favour of the Bulls]. If he got a red card, the way we were playing, it was really going to be our game.

“As I said, the 50-50 [calls] this whole season has not gone our way.

“That really hurt us.

“He [Du Plessis] got his three weeks [ban] after the game, but it doesn’t help us.

“We still lost the game.”
