WP boss resigns
NEWS: Another high-ranking official has walked away from Newlands in a cloud of controversy.
Western Province Rugby Football Union vice-president Gerald Njengele handed in his ‘voluntary resignation’ on Thursday.
His resignation stems from the highly publicized racial incident at the Cape Town leg of the Sevens World Series last December and the internal disciplinary hearings which followed.
Njengele was initially suspended for four years, for his racial outburst at the Cape Town Stadium.
However, he appealed the finding of the disciplinary tribunal and the matter was then referred to an appeals tribunal – which subsequently cleared him of all charges.
The saga did not end there.
WPRFU President Thelo Wakefield revealed that he received Njengele’s resignation on Thursday.
“Njengele took the magnanimous decision to resign, in acknowledgement of the fact that no one person is greater than the [WP] union and that the name and reputation of WPRFU needs to be held in high esteem at all times,” Wakefield said.
“We wish to thank Njengele for his valuable contributions to the activities of the WPRFU and wish him well for his future endeavours,” he added.
