Youngsters and Boks make Dobson proud
REACTION: Western province head coach John Dobson was pleased with a number of individual performances in his team’s impressive 57-28 win over the Pumas in Nelspruit on Friday.
Province scored eight tries in the win and they currently sit at the top of the Currie Cup standings after three rounds. Province opened their campaign with a 32-0 win over the Free State Cheetahs at Newlands in Round Two.
“It is a tough place to play so we are happy with the result,” said Dobson.
“I was very pleased with some individual performances. I think guys like Ernst van Rhyn and Herschel Jantjies, the youngsters, are both doing excellent jobs.
“The Springboks [Damian de Allende and Wilco Louw] played with heart and commitment which is great because they knew they were climbing on a plane to go on the Springbok tour and they put so much into that game. It’s a good reflection on them and the culture of Western Province rugby.”
Province’s attack has been the highlight of their campaign so far.
“I think we slacked a bit in terms of tempo late in the first half and let them [Pumas] back in with two tries, but we were very pleased with our breakdown and the speed of play and the way we got through phases,” Dobson added.
Province have a bye in Round Four before they travel to Johannesburg to take on the Golden Lions in Round Five.
