Paarwater pinpoints what Province needs to fix

REACTION: Western Province coach Jerome Paarwater has identified a few work-ons, following his team’s Currie Cup win over Lions at the weekend.

WP opened their Currie Cup campaign in style, securing a 48-36 win over the Lions at the Cape Town Stadium.

The Capetonians scored seven tries, with three of those going to the Sevens superstar Angelo Davids.

Despite the team’s impressive attacking display, Paarwater admitted he is not happy with the discipline.

SA Rugby’s statistics showed WP conceded 12 penalties and were handed two yellow cards.

“Obviously we are not happy with the discipline,” Paarwater told reporters after the match.

“In regards to Adre Smith [the dangerous tackle in the 34th mimute], it is rugby.  He is a big guy and the [Lions player] ducked into the tackle.

“But the one with Godlen Masimla [tripping an opponent in the 75th minute] that was definitely discipline and it was poor,”

The coach also added that defence is a concern.

However, he said that as the season progress it will improve.

“We worked on defence, but not a lot, because we were waiting on some URC players.

“Nonetheless I knew the defence was an aspect of the game we were going to struggle with.”

He added: “Maul stopping was another big concern and I think going into next week that will be our work-ons for the Bulls.

“We didn’t have footage of the Lions.

“However, after watching the Bulls game we know how to prepare and will do better.”

With the Stormers set to resume their United Rugby Champions campaign this week, Paarwater is set to lose some key WP players for Wednesday’s clash against the Bulls.

When asked about the possible disruption, Paarwater said: “I’ve spoken to [Stormers head coach] John Dobson about this game.

“It is a short turnaround so two or three guys will go up to join the URC side. We’ve always known it might happen.

“But, hopefully, 95 percent of the team stays the same.”
