Tiaan Lange: The hooker powering Griquas into the Currie Cup final
FEATURE: When Griquas run out for Saturday’s Currie Cup final against the Pumas, one name will stand out above the rest: Tiaan Lange.
The explosive hooker has been the Peacock Blues’ most lethal finisher this season, crossing the whitewash nine times to sit alone at the top of the Currie Cup try-scoring charts heading into the biggest match of the campaign.
For Pieter Bergh’s table-toppers, Lange has been a relentless ballcarrier, a destructive defender and one of the biggest reasons Griquas are 80 minutes away from lifting the Currie Cup.

Griquas’ unlikely leading scorer
Griquas have been the competition’s form team since an opening-round defeat to the Stormers XXIII.
Bergh’s side responded by winning six consecutive matches to finish the league phase at the top of the standings before carrying that momentum into the playoffs.
Their semifinal performances summed up the season perfectly. Against the Sharks XV in Kimberley, Griquas ran in eight tries during a 55-21 demolition, with Lange and Dylan Maart each grabbing hat-tricks.
A week later, Lange was back on the scoresheet, crashing over from a driving maul on the stroke of half-time as Griquas overwhelmed the Lions with five first-half tries to book their place in the final.
It’s become a familiar sight this season.
The numbers behind Lange’s breakout campaign
Lange’s statistics underline just how influential he has been.
Across 374 minutes in the 2026 Currie Cup, he has:
- Scored 9 tries — the most in the competition.
- Carried for 260 metres, more than any other hooker.
- Made 71 carries.
- Beaten 15 defenders, the highest total among Currie Cup hookers.
- Completed 63 tackles, averaging nine tackles per game.
- Won 2 turnovers.
- Registered 1 try assist with a 100% passing accuracy from his seven passes.
For a hooker, they’re remarkable attacking numbers.
Lange ranks among the competition’s elite for metres carried and defenders beaten, showing a willingness to get involved well beyond traditional set-piece duties.

Not just a maul specialist
He’s become one of Kimberley’s most consistent ballcarriers, regularly punching holes around the fringes before getting back to his feet to make tackle after tackle.
Bergh believes it’s Lange’s aggression and engine that separate him from most players in his position.
“He’s a toughie. He just doesn’t stop. He can keep going.
“He is very aggressive and he doesn’t give up. He is a good tackler, a good carrier, he manages the maul well and he has used his opportunities.”
Those opportunities have turned Lange into one of the stories of the Currie Cup season.
From Bulls captain to Griquas star
Lange joined Griquas in November 2024, arriving from the Bulls with an impressive pedigree.
A Junior Springbok, he captained the Bulls Under-20 side to the 2022 title and scored twice in that final as the Pretoria outfit dominated through their lineout maul.
That year he was named the Bulls Junior Player of the Year for his standout performances during the 2021/22 season.
Born in Boksburg and educated at Hoërskool Menlopark, Lange captained the school’s first XV and built a reputation as a hardworking, explosive front-rower.
If the Peacock Blues are celebrating with the trophy on Saturday, don’t be surprised if the Currie Cup’s top try scorer has crossed the line one more time.
