VIDEO: Western Province's bold goal after dismal Currie Cup start
WATCH as Western Province assistant coach Dewald Duvenage speaks about his side’s ambitions for the Currie Cup season despite a tough start to the competition.
The 34-time Currie Cup winners haven’t lifted the coveted domestic trophy since they triumphed over the Sharks in Durban in 2017.
They’re also rooted at the bottom of the table after three rounds from seven matches, but this past weekend’s upset results have given the Capetonians a sparkle of hope to get back into contention ahead of their clash against the Cheetahs.

After the Boland Cavaliers defeated the Lions on Sunday, head coach Hawies Fourie dropped the hint that Western Province and the Sharks might introduce their United Rugby Championship players at the back end of the Currie Cup competition.
“From what I heard at the back end of the competition, some of the United Rugby Championship teams will field their strongest available sides,” Fourie said on Sunday.
“We must still play the Sharks and Western Province in our last two games, so we’ve got to make sure that we use these next two games well.”
However, Duvenage confirmed to @rugby365com that they will not include URC players and that they have not given up on making the play-offs despite a tough start to the season.

“From my understanding, we aim to get to the semifinals,” Duvenhage told @rugby365com.
“Dobbo [John Dobson] said if we get to the semifinals, it’s 100 percent on us.
“So, we’re still striving to get to the semifinals.
“There’s nothing better than holding the Currie Cup, and for every young player who wants to achieve it, they’ll have to play in a semifinal and a Final.
“For the moment, it’s just the current group we’re working with, and we are striving towards the play-off goal.
“We’ll keep on working hard to compete and reach the semifinal stage.”
