Bulls boss' harsh reality and star's injury
REACTION: Bulls head coach Johan Ackermann cut a relieved figure after his side’s crucial 26–24 Champions Cup victory over Section Paloise in France on Friday.
But there were concerns over the condition of hooker Akker van der Merwe.
Van der Merwe delivered a commanding performance in a high-pressure encounter, playing a pivotal role in ending the Bulls’ seven-match losing streak
The Bulls hooker played an immense role in the 26-24 win over Section Paloise on Friday in France.
The 34-year-old was instrumental in the build-up to the opening try, swinging a long pass to Mphilo Gumede, who crossed the line, before adding a try of his own in the 29th minute at the back of a rolling maul.
He was influential at set pieces, scrummaging effectively and throwing accurately at the line-outs. However, his night ended prematurely when he was forced to leave the field in the 67th minute after struggling with a neck issue following a scrum.
Speaking to reporters, Ackermann provided an update on the hooker’s condition.
“He [Van der Merwe] came back from the hospital, and they couldn’t find anything physically in the neck at this stage,” Ackermann said.
“Although he felt something, it was diagnosed as a massive spasm. I think we all know how sore that can be if you’ve had it in your lower back.
“That’s what we got from the doctors at the moment. We’re just grateful that nothing structurally has broken or cracked.
“He’s with us, obviously walking very slowly. He can’t turn his neck a lot.
“We’re just grateful that it’s not as serious as it was on the field. I’m so grateful for that.”
The victory lifts the Pretoria-based franchise to fourth place in Pool 4, with their qualification fate now resting on the outcome of Sunday’s clash between Scarlets and Northampton Saints.
While the result has the potential to revive the Bulls’ season, Ackermann was quick to urge caution.
The Bulls face Edinburgh next in the United Rugby Championship.
“The reality is it’s one win. There’s a tough Edinburgh side, one of the best teams and full of internationals.
“We will enjoy the win as a group, players and staff, and watch a bit of other rugby, then reset tomorrow and start focusing on Edinburgh.
“It’s a step in the right direction, but obviously it’s only one win, so there’s nothing to get too overexcited about.”
