Joe Schmidt returns to Ulster in key coaching development role
NEWS: Former Ireland and Wallabies head coach Joe Schmidt has returned to Ulster after being appointed as the province’s new coach development advisor.
With his two-year stint in charge of Australia now complete, Schmidt will spend the next 12 months working alongside Ulster’s coaching structures, both in person and remotely, to strengthen the province’s coaching pathway from grassroots through to the professional game.
The appointment sees one of rugby’s most respected coaching minds return to Irish rugby following a glittering career that included two Heineken Cup titles with Leinster, three Six Nations crowns with Ireland – including the 2018 Grand Slam – and World Rugby Coach of the Year honours.

Schmidt also served as an assistant with the All Blacks during their run to the 2023 World Cup final before taking over the Wallabies, helping rebuild Australia after their disappointing 2023 World Cup campaign.
Ulster CEO Hugh McCaughey said Schmidt’s appointment reflects the province’s commitment to investing in its future beyond player development.
“As we continue to invest in the future of rugby across Ulster, it is important that we invest not only in our players, but also in the people responsible for developing them.
“Through our work in schools, clubs and age-grade rugby, we are creating opportunities for the next generation of players, and Joe’s appointment will help ensure we are strengthening our coaching pathway alongside that investment.
“Joe’s experience and expertise are recognised throughout the world game. His support will help us develop coaches at every level of the pathway and ultimately strengthen rugby across the province.”
Ulster general manager Rory Best believes Schmidt’s arrival is another important step in the province’s long-term vision.
“Last season we introduced a dedicated focus on player development within our performance pathway. It is equally important that we prioritise the long-term development of our coaches.
“Strengthening our coaching pathway is a key part of our long-term strategy. Joe’s involvement will help us support coaches at every stage of their journey, from emerging coaches in schools and clubs through to those operating across our pathway programmes.”
The appointment also reunites Schmidt with Ulster head coach Richie Murphy, who previously worked under him at Leinster.
“I’ve worked with Joe on a number of occasions throughout my coaching career and know first-hand the value he brings to an organisation,” Murphy said.
Schmidt said he is looking forward to helping develop the next generation of coaches across the province.
“Ulster has a proud rugby tradition and further developing the coaching pathway in the region is something that we believe can add value.”
