Last minute injuries to force Gatland's hand

NEWS: Warren Gatland is pondering several key issues before naming his Six Nations squad on Monday.

Wales international Cai Evans left the ground on crutches on Sunday evening after suffering an injury while playing for Dragons against Pau in the Challenge Cup.

Evans, on only his third start of the season, was forced off for a head injury assessment after a late tackle that saw Pau number eight Thibault Hamaonou yellow carded.

The Wales fullback returned only to pull up 10 minutes later with what appeared to be a serious Achilles problem and facing another injury lay-off.

Evans has earned two caps for the senior national team having been called up previously by Gatland as flyhalf cover.

Given the concerns Gatland currently has in that position – Gareth Anscombe is dealing with a knee issue and Sam Costelow was forced off on Friday night with a shoulder problem.

Evans limping off hours before Gatland is set to announce his squad for the Six Nations does not augur well for any potential involvement he might have had in the tournament.
