'Heartbroken' Young still optimistic
Wasps led until the clock moved into the red zone, but then saw the Australian wing break through to score the try that gave the reigning champions a 15-11 win that extended their unbeaten home run to 18 games.
Moments earlier it looked as though Wasps were going to become the first team to win in Europe at Stade Felix-Mayol and earn themselves a ticket into the quarterfinal as the winners of Pool Five.
"I'm heartbroken for the players. You don't come here and be in a winning position with 80 minutes gone," Young told EPC Rugby.
"We are all just really gutted. We talked about there being no ifs, buts, maybes or regrets and I couldn't have asked any more of the players. They showed real heart and I'm really proud of the effort.
"At half-time we said it looked as though we had stage fright. We asked them to really take them on in the second half.
"That is two games now in which we have been leading with 80 minutes gone on the clock and then lost – Bath and now Toulon. We did enough to deserve to win."
The race for the pool title will still go down to the wire in Round Six with Toulon having to travel to bath and Wasps taking on Leinster in a repeat of last season's final pool clash at the Ricoh Arena. With only a point separating the top two teams Wasps can still win the pool or qualify as a best runner up.
"We are confident we can win next weekend, but we know it is going to be difficult because they are a quality team. They will still be hurting a little bit from our win against them," said Young.
