Saints victory down to the pack
A dominant scrum and a powerful rolling maul were the foundations upon which the victory was built, as Ken Pisi and Alex Waller scored tries and flyhalf JJ Hanrahan kicked a conversion and a penalty on his first start for this new club.
The win is a welcome boost for Saints, who have had a tough start in the Premiership, and Wood felt the victory was down to the guys in the engine room.
"It was a massive effort from the pack. Up front there were a lot of things going on in there in the front row, which I don't really understand, I just bend down and push and the rest took care of itself. I thought we were going to pull away when we scored in the corner through Alex.
"I thought they were starting to break but they regathered themselves and they hung in there. We were able to get the win in the end. It was a brutal game, it was exactly what you would expect. We have slipped up on the opening day a few times in the Champions Cup over the last few years so it was really important of us to get the four points.
"We were disappointed with how we played against Saracens last week so it was good to bounce back," said the England loose forward.
