Townsend happy with six try trouncing
It was he perfect way to reply to the disappointing home defeat to Northampton Saints in their opening game in Pool Three and seemed to be a celebration from the players of the news that their head man had signed a new contract earlier in the week.
"Not only was it a satisfying win, but it was a better game than I had anticipated in what were quite heavy conditions," said Townsend.
"We saw a very good first-half performance – the forwards had set the platform and we were knocking on the door several times.
"We came very close twice and Stuart Hogg dropped the ball on a certain intercept score and we could have had at least another 14 points."
The other seven points would have come through a try from Australian wing Taqele Naiyaravoro had the TMO not ruled that his big toe had touched the line after he gathered a ball 30 metres out.
That denied the home side of what would have been the try of the day – and a club European record for the new boy.
Instead he had to be content with a hat-trick of tries, thus matching Thom Evans' record haul in 2008/09 against Bath.
Maybe he can follow up his Man of the Match performance with something even better at Parc y Scarlets in round four in what will be his new club's 100th game in the top flight of European club rugby.
"It was a just pity that what was a world-class try from Taqele was chalked off in the first-half by the TMO. Taqele is not just big and quick, but moves quickly to both left and right," said Townsend.
