Sharks ditch the star power for crucial European Challenge Cup opener
TEAM ANNOUNCEMENT: The Sharks have opted for a relatively low-key line-up without several big-name stars for their 2026/27 EPCR Challenge Cup opener against Lyon in France this weekend.
Nick Hatton captains the side from No.8, while Stephan Lewies returns to the starting XV after featuring off the bench in last week’s Vodacom United Rugby Championship encounter. The lock brings valuable leadership following seven years abroad with Harlequins, where he spent four years as club captain.
Flyhalf Jordan Hendrikse also returns from injury at the perfect time, while Jaco Williams is back in the starting line-up.
The Sharks have a strong bench to call on for added energy and determination, with Emile van Heerden, Tino Mavesere, Bradley Davids and Jurenzo Julius among those offering experience and quality.
Sharks forward coach Warren Whiteley believes the competition presents an exciting opportunity for the team, who have previously lifted the trophy.
“We’re excited to be back in Europe, in the EPCR, a competition we place a lot of importance in, having been past winners,” he said from the team’s new base in Lyon.
“We’re expecting a great game against a physical team. They have a powerful pack and place a lot of importance on the set-piece and have some dangerous backs. They like to throw the ball around too.
“We’re playing on an artificial pitch, so there will be times when it’s nice and fast-paced, which we’re excited about.
“We’re really keen to see how some of the boys take their opportunities, having put their hands up.”
