Sharks rope in Nemo and Lewies

TRANSFER NEWS: Two South Africans who are plying their trade abroad are heading back home to join the Sharks.

The Sharks welcomed the latest additions on their social media on Wednesday.

Springbok lock Stephan Lewies and prop Nemo Roelofse have both signed on the dotted line and will make Durban their new home at the end of the current season.

The 33-year-old Lewies needs no introduction. The one-cap Bok spent the last seven seasons playing for Harlequins in the PREM and has made 85 appearances for the club.

He led Harlequins to their second PREM title in 2021, having succeeded Chris Robshaw as captain.

“I reflect on my seven years at the club with a huge amount of gratitude. I arrived at the club in 2019 with a few suitcases and a girlfriend.

“I’m leaving the club with a lot of memories, new friends, a wife and baby,” said Lewies, who won his only Springbok cap as a replacement against Scotland in 2014.

“My time at Quins has been unbelievable. It’s hard to put it into words, really, and say thank you enough, but gratitude is the word that comes to mind, and a lot of pride as well.

“The aim for this season is to finish on a high. If there is one club that has proven they can turn it around, it is Harlequins, and I believe we can do that. It started against the Stormers at the weekend, and we’ve got another big game against La Rochelle on Sunday.

Roelofse was schooled at Oakdale High School in Riversdale, represented the South Western Districts from the age of 16, and was a vital cog in their Under-19 campaign in 2015.

In 2016, he made the jump to the senior professional game, featuring in the Currie Cup First Division.

A single Varsity Cup with NMMU followed, and French clubs started clamouring for his signature.

He signed for Albi and made 19 appearances for the club in a single season before joining Nevers ahead of the 2017/18 season.

His rapid rise continued in the PROD2, and by May 2021, he had over 70 appearances under his belt.

He signed for Stade Francais ahead of the 2020/21 season and currently plays for Perpignan.
