Ardie Savea has spoken candidly about the honour of captaining the All Blacks during the upcoming Nations Championship, describing the appointment as both humbling and deeply meaningful for his family and Pasifika community.

With regular skipper Scott Barrett sidelined through injury, new All Blacks coach Dave Rennie has entrusted Savea with the captaincy for Tests against Ireland, France and Italy in July.

Savea, who previously worked under Rennie at the Steelers in Japan, believes the experienced coach will bring accountability and energy to the national side as they look to re-establish themselves among the world’s leading teams.

“I spent time with Rens at Kobe, and one thing I know is that he will come in and work hard,” Savea said.

“He’ll keep us accountable in training, in meetings and in games. It’s going to be exciting.”

While Rennie confirmed Barrett will resume the captaincy once he returns to full fitness, Savea said he was grateful for the trust shown in him by the coaching staff.

The dynamic loose forward admitted he felt both nervous and excited about the responsibility, but said his faith would help guide him through the challenge.

“It’s a huge honour,” said Savea.

“I’m nervous, but really excited. The more pressure and responsibility I have, the more I turn to my faith, and I know special things can happen.”

Savea also reflected on the strong Pasifika influence within the All Blacks setup, saying it was a source of immense pride.

“We represent our people, but we’re all Pacific,” he said.

“The Pacific Ocean connects us all. Over the next 17 months it’s about bringing the team, the country and the people together and trying to win.”

His appointment marks another significant moment for Pasifika representation in New Zealand rugby, with Savea set to lead a squad carrying the hopes of a nation as they begin a new era under Rennie.
