Cockerill: Tigers bite back

Leicester Tigers have formally appealed against the nine-match suspension given to Director of Rugby Richard Cockerill.

Cockerill was handed the helfty ban in the wake of his unpleasant exchange with fourth official Stuart Terheege during last season's Premiership Final.

In a stament the Rugby Football Union confirmed that Tigers gave notice of the appeal against the suspension.

Cockerill was found guilty of conduct prejudicial to the interests of the union and/or the game contrary to RFU Rule 5.12 at a RFU disciplinary hearing last month.

"Details of the staging of the appeal, which is against the sanction only, will be released in due course," the statement said.

Tigers said that after receiving the written judgement of the Rugby Football Union disciplinary panel's verdict on the charges relating to the Premiership Final in May, the club confirmed that it will appeal solely against elements of the sentence rather than the guilty verdict.

"The club will make no further comment until the outcome of the appeal is known."

At a hearing in Coventry, he had pleaded not guilty to the charges of using obscene, inappropriate and/or unprofessional language and behaviour towards Terheege.
