Gloucester out to kick off 2017 in style

After trailing 3-11 at half-time and then seeing Harlequins taking a 28-10 lead at Twickenham on Tuesday, Scott and co were looking at a miserable day at Rugby HQ.

However, they were not about to take the defeat lying down and launched a heroic comeback that only just fell short of turning the game on its head as Harlequins held on for a 28-24 win in front of 77 567 fans.

The defeat was somewhat of a microcosm of Gloucester's season so far as they have mixed some scintillating rugby with the occasional defensive lapse.

But Scott insists they will not change the way they go about things as they turn their attentions to Northampton Saints on New Year's Day.

"Unfortunately we only played well [at Twickenham] in patches and that wasn’t quite good enough," Scott said.

"We weren't good in the first half and in the second half we conceded a couple of soft tries. We fought back pretty well but overall we are not happy with the way we played.

"Coming in at half-time with only three points on the board is not good enough at this level and we had chances to take our opportunities in their 22 which we didn’t do, and they managed to convert their opportunity they got.

"You have just got to play moment by moment and you just try and take away the occasion and the clock and try to execute our game plan.

"We got our try and you felt the momentum shift and at the end they were absolutely delighted to get the ball off the field.

"So you have just got to go through processes and back the way you are playing."

The New Year's Day clash at Kingsholm takes on extra significance with Gloucester's losing bonus point from Twickenham moving them level on points with seventh-placed Northampton in the Premiership table.

And centre Scott admits the players will take on the Saints with the words of their coaching staff still ringing in their ears.

"There were some harsh words from our coaches at full-time, they gave us a bit of a rocket and said we need to come on the right side of these games so I think there will be a bit of that this week," added Scott.

"We'll have the coaches getting on our backs which is good and we'll have a bit of a backlash hopefully at Kingsholm.

"I think overall on Tuesday we weren't quite good enough to win, which can be a good thing.

"Sometimes you come away from a game where you've not played as well and a big performance follows that so that's what we're hoping for."
