Sharks sign England lock
Mouritz Botha has been reluctantly released by Saracens to join the Sharks, with effect from January 1, 2015 – he has signed for two years.
South African-born Botha joined Saracens in 2009 and was named in the England Saxons squad in 2011 after becoming eligible on residency grounds.
Botha was selected in the England 44-man squad for the 2011 World Cup and made his debut in the 23–19 England victory over Wales.
The lock played in every game of England's 2012 Six Nations campaign, ultimately helping them to a second place finish.
Botha joins up with a number of former Saracens team mates at the Sharks including the CEO John Smit who reached 46 caps for the London club from 2011.
England prop Matt Stevens and technical advisor Brendan Venter also have very strong ties with the Saracens.
Mark McCall, Director of Rugby at Saracens said: “Mouritz has been a massive part of our squad and our culture for the past five and a half seasons, and we are very sorry to see him leave.
"However, this is a great opportunity to play for one of the top teams in the Super Rugby, and we wish him, Natasha and young Joshua well.”
Botha joined Saracens from Bedford Blues in 2009, has played 142 matches for the club and has also been capped 10 times by England.
The 32-year-old, said: “Saracens will always be important to me, and it’s difficult to leave so many friends in what remains a unique sporting environment, but the Sharks are trying to build something special in Durban.
"This will be a great rugby challenge for me, and a great adventure for my young family.”
Confirming his signing, The Sharks CEO said: “Mouritz is a great acquisition for the Sharks and his experience gained at international level will be hugely beneficial to our squad.
"He will add significant value and depth to our tight five.
“We look forward to welcoming him to Durban.”
