Warburton set for New Year's return

Sam Warburton is set to return from a shoulder injury when Cardiff Blues face Newport Gwent Dragons at Rodney Parade in the Pro12 on New Year's Day.

The Dragons beat Cardiff 23-17 on Boxing Day in their first festive derby.

The Wales captain has recovered from an injury suffered in Cardiff's 21-9 win over Scarlets on December 19.

"Sam's available and he took part in the training today [Monday] so we'll see how he gets through," said Blues boss Mark Hammett.

After last week's defeat, Hammett said Lyn Jones' Dragons showed more spark and intensity than his Blues side. However, Dragons coach Jones now believes extra motivation rests with their opponents ahead of the rematch.

Dragons lock Andrew Coombs is available despite a head injury, but No.8 Taulupe Faletau (ankle), back row Lewis Evans (leg) and hooker TR Thomas (back spasm) are all doubtful.

While Warburton is set to return, Hammett hopes his side's efforts can help improve Alex Cuthbert's form. The Wales and Lions wing has scored a solitary try in 10 starts this season, but scored twice for Wales during their November Tests.

"That's the life of a professional footballer. You have ups and downs, as do certain cricketers as well. It's how you deal with those ups and downs and he's continued to work hard. We know he's a confidence player and when we start going right, he'll probably play better.

"When we're not as good it's probably a bit more difficult for him. So it's a challenge for not just Cuthbert, [but] a lot of sports people.

"So we'll continue to work alongside Cuthbert. We want to grow him as a better player, better Blue and also a Welsh international."
