Warriors secure double-signing

Glasgow Warriors have received a boost ahead of Saturday's sold-out Pro12 match with Ulster, with the news that centre Fraser Lyle and wing Rory Hughes have signed new deals with the club.

Lyle has penned a two-year contract, while Hughes has signed for a further season.

The Scottish duo have represented Stirling County and were part of the Glasgow Warriors squad which successfully defended their title at the Melrose Sevens last month.

Lyle will be staying with Glasgow until at least May 2017, fresh from earning his first professional contract earlier this season after being spotted playing for Stirling County in the BT Premiership.

He impressed for the Warriors in an 'A' fixture with Edinburgh, before putting pen-to-paper on a deal until the end of the current campaign last November.

The centre made his Warriors debut against Zebre in Parma in February and scored a try in the 54-10 win. He has gone on to make four appearances this season.

Lyle was called up to the Scotland Sevens squad in March 2015 and won his first cap at the Hong Kong Sevens. He marked his debut with tries against New Zealand and Wales that weekend.

The 26-year-old signed from Stirling County and has previously played for Aberdeen Grammar and for clubs in Canada.

Fraser Lyle said: "It's such a great environment at Scotstoun and I've really enjoyed working with the coaches and developing my game.

"I played some games during the Six Nations when our Scotland players were away and I enjoyed being able to contribute to the success of the team.

"To then go on and play for Scotland Sevens in the World Series and win the Melrose Sevens was really enjoyable.

"I'm delighted to have signed for another two years and I'm determined to work hard and achieve as much as I can."

22-year-old Hughes has made seven appearances for the club and was signed as a professional at the start of this season, having graduated from the Scottish Rugby Academy Stage 3 set-up.

The wing made his Scotland Sevens debut at the London Sevens in May 2012, in the pool game against South Africa.

At the fifteen-a-side game he has represented Scotland at Under-17 and Under-18 level.

Hughes made his Warriors debut against Connacht at Scotstoun in February 2014 and was part of the Glasgow squad which won the Melrose Sevens in 2014 and 2015. He was the club's top try scorer on both occasions.

Rory Hughes said: "I've really enjoyed my first year as a professional and I'm happy to be staying at the club.

"I want to continue to make a contribution and get as much game time as possible next season.

"I've developed a lot since I first joined the Scottish Rugby Academy."

Glasgow Warriors head coach Gregor Townsend said: "It's great news that Fraser [Lyle] and Rory [Hughes] are staying with the club to continue their development.

"Fraser [Lyle] came in earlier this season and worked very hard to earn a short-term deal, so we're delighted he's extended his contract with us.

"He's had a really good season, impressing for us during the international window and then for Scotland Sevens in Hong Kong and Tokyo.

"Rory [Hughes] has come through our Academy system and has made a lot of improvements in his game, since signing his first professional contract at the start of this season.

"He is maturing as a person and has a very professional approach to getting the most out of his rugby career.

"He was a key member of our squad which won back-to-back Melrose Sevens titles and has been playing well for Stirling County in this season.

"Both players have worked extremely hard to earn new contracts and are set to play bigger roles at the club next season."
