BlitzBoks channel Springboks in SVNS title triumph
South Africa’s BlitzBoks have once again underlined the country’s rugby dominance, drawing inspiration from the Springboks to power their way to the 2026 HSBC SVNS Series title.
Head coach Philip Snyman revealed that the team’s recent success has been shaped by the same mentality and standards that have defined the Springboks’ rise on the global stage.
South Africa sealed their second consecutive SNVS Series title at the weekend with a hard-fought victory over Fiji in the New York Final, capping off a remarkable run of form.
Just weeks earlier, the BlitzBoks trailed Fiji and sat fourth on the log, but a stunning run of three consecutive tournament victories in Perth, Vancouver, and New York saw them surge to the top.
“What makes it even more special is that a few weeks ago we were still behind Fiji,” Snyman told reporters at Cape Town International Airport.
“Before the tour, we were actually fourth on the log, and to win the last three tournaments shows the character of this team.
“I think it’s the first time the South Africa Sevens team have won three tournaments in a row, and then also being crowned the league champions.”

The 38-year-old revealed that finishing at the top of the standings offers significant benefits.
“I don’t think a lot of people know, but at the HSBC SVNS World Championship, the top four teams of Sevens 2 are joining, and then it will be a 12-team World Championship. But everybody needs to qualify for next year’s World Series except the number one team in the league – and that’s us now.
“We kept that away from the players because we didn’t want to add extra pressure on them. So, for me, I’m really proud of the guys. They showed phenomenal effort, phenomenal heart and exactly what South Africa Sevens stands for.”
Despite already securing qualification, Snyman insisted the squad remains driven ahead of the upcoming HSBC SVNS World Championship events in Hong Kong, Valladolid and Bordeaux.
“We’re never going to celebrate like it’s our last victory.
“We want to create habits and a winning culture, and make that part of who we are. So this will definitely motivate us more.”
He added: “We can go to Hong Kong and the rest of the championships with freedom, the three tournaments that are still ahead of us. But I know the desire and hunger are there, and the motivation will be even greater.”
Snyman acknowledged that being champions brings added pressure but stated the team is embracing it – taking inspiration from the Springboks.
“I think that’s what we like, and we’ve learned that from the Springboks team,” he stated.
“In the last five tournaments, we played in all five semifinals. We played in four finals. We won four of the finals.
“And then we got crowned champions of the league. So like the Springboks have shown us, that’s exactly where we as South Africans want to be.”
A key part of the BlitzBoks’ success has been integrating new talent without compromising results.
Renaldo Young, Luan Gilmore, Nabo Sokoyi, Grant de Jager and Jayden Nell all made their debuts this season, contributing to the squad’s depth.
“We want to build depth in the squad, but we don’t want to sacrifice results.
“It’s always difficult to find the right balance between that, and I think that just comes down to the players. Everybody bought into the plan.
“The competitive excellence at training, how they push each other for a spot in the team, was really good. And every tournament where we brought in a youngster, we managed to win. So I think, overall, it was a massive squad effort.”
