BlitzBoks, SA women gear up for high-stakes SVNS World Championship
NEWS: South Africa will have a strong stake in the upcoming HSBC SVNS World Championship after all 24 teams were confirmed following a gruelling global qualification process across the SVNS Series, SVNS 2, and SVNS 3.
With showpiece events lined up in Hong Kong, Valladolid, and Bordeaux, both the men’s and women’s competitions promise high-stakes action and crucially, a chance to secure places on next season’s Series.
There’s added local interest with both South Africa and Argentina’s women fighting their way through the lower tiers.
Starting in SVNS 3, they climbed into the top four in SVNS 2 after tournaments in Nairobi, Montevideo, and São Paulo, a significant achievement that underlines the growth of the South African women’s sevens programme.

Attention now shifts to Hong Kong (April 17–19), where the pools have been drawn for the opening leg. The BlitzBoks, fresh off their Series title under Philip Snyman, face a tricky Pool A alongside Argentina, Spain, and Uruguay.
Despite their champion status, the BlitzBoks won’t have it easy, particularly against Argentina and Spain, who will be eager to bounce back after disappointing Series campaigns.
On the women’s side, New Zealand women’s national rugby sevens team headlines a competitive field, but teams like Fiji and Australia will be desperate to respond after narrowly missing out on the Series crown. Fiji, in particular, will draw confidence from its rich history in Hong Kong, where they have dominated over the years.
For South Africa, this tournament represents more than just another title shot. It’s a chance to assert dominance on the global sevens stage, while the women’s team continues their rise through the ranks.
