Glasgow Gold massive for Gill

Wallaby and Australian Sevens player Liam Gill insists winning a Commonwealth Sevens gold would be on par with taking the Bledisloe Cup back from the Kiwis.

The Australians have a massive rivaly with the Kiwi's in the 15-man code, the Bledisloe Cup being the ultimate rivalries' prize.

However, if Gill is to claim gold in Glasgow he will surly have to over come the New Zealanders in the Seven-man code as out-andout favourites.

The Kiwis are clear favourites, having won all four gold medals on offer at the Games, starting in Kuala Lumpur, 1998.

Australia's best result was a silver at Delhi 2010.

Speaking of domination, it is the Kiwis who currently hold the Bledisloe cup – as they have done for the past 11 years.

Gill, a 15-Test Wallaby, didn't have any doubts when asked how winning Sevens gold in Glasgow would compare to breaking Australia's Bledisloe drought.

"Winning silver last time was amazing," Gill told the Australian Associated Press.

"If we can win gold it would be huge.

"It compares to the greatest honours of the game."

The Reds flank, one of two Super Rugby players in the squad along with the Rebels' Sean McMahon, is hoping an impressive showing in the Games might be his pathway back into the Wallabies squad ahead of the Rugby Championship.

However, Gill is now only focused on the Games since arriving in Scotland.

"To go into the athlete's village again as part of a different set up for the Sevens, to have another chance at winning a gold medal – that's where my head's at and I can't wait," he said.

The Australian side, coached by Welshman Geraint John, will face England, Sri Lanka and Uganda in their pool after competition kicks off on July 26.
