Kenya players call off bonus strike

The bonus dispute had threatened Kenya's participation in the opening leg of the World Series in Dubai this weekend.

"The matter has been settled and the players can now focus on the Dubai and Cape Town tournaments," said KRU Vice-Chairman Thomas Opiyo.

"It has been a tough week, but finally we have had a breakthrough and we can now concentrate on matters on the pitch."

Kenya players call off bonus strikeThe team will, however, have very little time to train before their departure for Dubai later on Monday.

The players had demanded match-by-match bonuses totalling about 20 million shillings (200 000 dollars, 189 000 euros) before they resume training.

A deal brokered by the Kenyan sports ministry will see the government pay them 13 million shillings, while the national federation will foot the rest of the bill.

The dispute had delayed the naming of the final 12-man touring squad, which new coach Innocent Simiyu announced Monday.

The world's leading Sevens try scorer Collins Injera and fellow wing Oscar Ouma have been left out of the squad for Dubai.

Ouma and Injera, who holds the all-time record of 235 tries, will also miss out on the Cape Town Sevens on December 10-11.

Simiyu has included two new caps – Brian Tanga and Darwin Mukidza – in the squad that will play Australia, France and Japan in Dubai.

The squad also features the return of Cyprian Kuto and Dan Sikuta, while Leonard Mugaisi returns after a long injury lay-off.
