Kiwis too good for BlitzBokke

New Zealand put down a big marker in their charge towards yet another IRB Sevens World Series crown.

The Kiwis beat South Africa, their only threat, in pool play on Day One of the Edinburgh leg – the penultimate tournament of the 2013/14 series.

Hosts Scotland also booked their place in the Cup quarterfinals after an enthralling opening day of action .

The hosts beat Australia 19-7, the United States 26-0 and Spain 33-12 – thanks to two James Eddie tries to reach a first Cup quarterfinal since round two of the World Series in Dubai, and top a pool for the first time since the 2013 Tokyo Sevens.

They will face defending Edinburgh champions South Africa in the quarterfinals, after the BlitzBokke suffered a 5-19 defeat to New Zealand to finish runners-up in Pool A, despite Justin Geduld crossing for his fourth try of the day.

The Kiwis took a step closer to a 12th World Series title with their progression to the Cup quarterfinals – having earlier beaten Samoa 26-7 and Portugal 38-0.

The reigning Series champions will now face their trans-Tasman rivals Australia in the quarterfinals.

Despite losing their opening match to the hosts, Australia came back strongly to beat Spain 36-7 and United States 34-14 thanks to two tries from Jesse Parahi.

Canada topped their pool after a 7-all draw with England in their pool decider and booked their place in the Cup quarterfinals – having earlier beaten Japan, thanks to a Mike Scholz hat-trick, and France, with Connor Trainor scoring one of the tries of the day.

Geraint John's side will face Kenya in the quarterfinals after Paul Treu's side progressed thanks to a superior points difference over Wales and Argentina with all three sides winning just one match on day one.

England will play Fiji after Samisoni Viriviri took his season try tally to 45 with five at Scotstoun Stadium in their 26-7, 24-17 and 45-0 wins over Argentina, Kenya and Wales.

In the Bowl, France will play Wales, Argentina meet Japan in a rematch of their pool encounter in Tokyo.
