Wellington Sevens on the move

Organisers of two of New Zealand's most iconic sporting events have joined forces – to deliver two weeks of Sevens, horse racing.

The Wellington Cup is ready to race on Saturday, January 23 – on Wellington Anniversary weekend – and the Wellington leg of the Sevens World Series will be on January 30 and 31, moving the two-day tournament to a Saturday and Sunday for the first time.

Wellington Racing Club Vice-President and Mayor of Upper Hutt Wayne Guppy said the two organisations had been looking at ways to work more closely together for some time.

"To combine with Sevens Wellington to create a festival of world class sporting events over two weeks and three weekends is a great achievement for both racing and Sevens – and for Wellington as a destination," Guppy said.

"It was an opportunity too good to miss."

Sevens Wellington General Manager Steve Dunbar said the two organisations would offer joint package options so Wellingtonians and visitors could make the most of the sport and fun.

"We know that many rugby fans also enjoy a day at the races and vice versa," Dunbar said.

"With joint packages we can make it easier for people to enjoy both and not have to choose between one or the other."
