Big milestone for Barrett-Theron as SA officials shine globally
NEWS: South Africa’s Aimee Barrett-Theron will reach a major career milestone in April when she becomes only the second female referee in history to officiate 50 Test matches.
Barrett-Theron will take charge of her 50th Test during the opening round of the Women’s Six Nations in France, headlining a series of international appointments that also underline South Africa’s growing influence in elite women’s officiating.
As the new Women’s Rugby World Cup cycle begins, World Rugby has confirmed match official appointments for the Women’s Six Nations, Pacific Four Series, and the inaugural Under-21 Women’s Six Nations Series with strong South African representation across all three competitions.
Naude makes Six Nations debut
In another boost for South African refereeing, Zoe Naude will make her Women’s Six Nations debut when she takes charge of Scotland v England.
Naude is one of two referees earning their first appointments in the 2026 championship, marking a significant step in her international progression.
A total of eight referees from five nations will oversee the 15 Six Nations matches on April 11-17 and May 17, with 29 officials from 12 countries involved across the tournament.
Barrett-Theron will also feature in the Pacific Four Series later in April, alongside Canada’s Julianne Zussman and Australia’s Amber McLachlan. The tournament will be staged in the United States and Australia.
Next generation on display
South Africa’s footprint extends to the next generation as well. Giana Viljoen has been appointed to referee in the inaugural U21 Women’s Six Nations Series, part of World Rugby’s Talent ID programme.
The nine-match U21 tournament runs from April 18.
