Another Lion on loan
The Stormers have snapped up another Lions player as Marius Coetzer finds himself sitting on the bench for the Stormers for their game against the Reds this weekend.
There have been a number of Lions players answering SOS calls in the different Super Rugby franchises this season and with their terrible run of injuries Coetzer will join the Stormers to make their Lions contingent swell to four loaned players.
Along with these four players the Stormers have signed Patric Cilliers and Michael Rhodes permanently from the Lions.
The Sharks are the other franchise that has been hit hard by injuries and have also looked north for assistance drawing in four Lions players of their own. The Bulls have also been sampling the talent across the Jukskei and have two Lions in their Super Rugby squad.
With the injury to Andries Bekker, the Stormers are missing an experienced player as well as their lynch-pin in the line-out but coach Allister Coetzee is confident with bringing in Coetzer as a replacement.
"Fortunately a player like Marius Coetzer, who has played over 100 first-class games and a number of Super Rugby games for the Lions, was available.
"He's been selected for the SA President's XV, who were training in Cape Town, and I was able to draft him," Coetzee said on Wednesday.
The Pretoria-born lock forward has had a taste of Western Province rugby in the past having represented the union during their 2006 and 2007 Vodacom Cup campaigns.
Coetzer, 29, turned out for the Lions in last year's Super Rugby series, and represents the Pumas in lower tier competitions.
The Stormers have not had a season to remember and languish in second to last place in the South African conference, just six points clear of the Southern Kings.
