Blues look to step up a gear

The Blues have picked up just seven points in their four games so far and are currently at the bottom of the New Zealand Conference. With this in mind, they will be looking to hit the ground running against the Jaguares on Saturday, before facing the Chiefs and Sharks ahead of their next bye.

"We know this week is really important," Gibson told stuff.co.nz. "We've got three games before we get a break again, and all those next three games are vital. We want to start well, and we're looking to refocus this week.

"We're feeling fresh after a couple of days off. The boys are really excited about this week. We want to be on top of our game and make sure everything clicks this week."

The Blues' last outing was a disappointing 25-25 draw with the Reds in Brisbane in Round Four and Gibson believes they only have themselves to blame for that result.

"We made the opportunities but just weren't clinical enough and dropped too much ball," added Gibson.

"They kicked it down our end and had us under pressure when we really should have had the pressure on them. We need to gel this week, simplify things and hopefully build pressure."

The Jaguares have only won one of their four games in this year's tournament so far, but Gibson says they will not be taking them lightly.

"They're pretty good, they're big boys, and they've probably got the best offloading game in the competition.

"We need to shut that down and hopefully run them around the field," said Gibson.
