Booze ban 'lifted' by Sharks

Attempts to enforce a booze ban at the outer fields of the Kings Park stadium in Durban has been discarded.

According to reports in the Durban media this week fans faced being arrested if caught drinking alcohol, with a suggestion that police would enforce existing legislation banning boozing in public spaces.

The move to clamp down on alcohol consumption followed the death of Brett Williams, who was beaten to death, apparently by a drunken mob, after a recent match.

It was suggested that even possessing alcohol could put supporters at Kings Park behind bars.

However, the Sharks (Pty) Ltd – the parent company of the Super Rugby team – advised boozy fans that they can still bring their own tipple into the outer fields.

"Regarding this Saturday's [Super Rugby] game against the Cheetahs, patrons and supporters will be able to bring alcohol into the outerfields precinct as usual," a statement from the Sharks said, with reference to media reports pertaining to a liquor ban.

"Going forward, patrons and supporters will still be able to enjoy having braais and consume alcohol on the outerfields. However, they will have to purchase alcohol from Sharks outlets on the outerfields precinct.

"The details of future logistics will be communicated to our supporters after comprehensive consultation between The Sharks Management and the Kwa-Zulu Natal Liquor Authority."

Sharks CEO, Brian van Zyl, said: "We would like to assure our fans that we are working closely with the relevant authorities to find an amicable resolution to the matter."
