Bruising encounter costs Retallick
The Chiefs' record 40-16 thumping of the Crusaders could have come at a heavy price, with champion lock Brodie Retallick suffering a suspected AC shoulder joint injury.
Retallick was forced to leave the field at Waikato Stadium after being driven back in a gang-tackle by Matt Todd and Wyatt Crockett in the first half.
Although there was nothing malicious in the tackle the World Rugby Player of the Year landed heavily on his shoulder and was immediately in strife.
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie confirmed that Retallick has a suspected AC joint problem but the extent of the problem couldn't immediately be confirmed after the match.
If the injury is serious there is the potential for the All Black to be out of action for up to two months.
All Blacks coach Steve Hansen has already got several of his internationals on an injury list, with flyhalf Dan Carter (lower right leg pain) and Israel Dagg (small muscle tear in thigh) unable to play the Chiefs because of injuries.
Even without Retallick the Chiefs were far too good for the Crusaders, exposing their defence with counter-attacks from quick turnover ball, making easy metres around the ruck and finding space from set plays.
Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder lost Robbie Fruean in the first half because he was experiencing pain in his forearm.
"We are not sure what it is – it could be really badly bruised or it could be fractured. He is expected to go for an X-ray," Blackadder said.
Scumhalf Mitchell Drummond suffered a bruised hip and was replaced by Andy Ellis in the first half.
Although no other Crusaders players suffered any physical injuries, the blow to their collective pride will be significant.
