Bulls in 'ominous' form
It required two late tries, but the Bulls showed some ominous form in racing to the top of the South African conference by whitewashing the Southern Kings.
Former Kings flank Jacques Potgieter and Springbok wing Akona Ndungane scored in the last five minutes as the Bulls wrapped a full-house five points with a 34-0 shut-out of the Kings at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in Port Elizabeth at the weekend.
It was a match in which the Bulls showed many of the traits that saw them claim the Super Rugby title three times between 2007 and 2010.
"We gave a great performance and the boys deserve credit for starting so well, then defending superbly before going into overdrive during the closing minutes," said Bulls captain and No 8 Pierre Spies.
"I was particularly pleased with the way we controlled the ball and turned pressure into points despite being disrupted during the game by injuries," he added.
While obviously delighted, Spies admitted there was a period just after the half-time break when they struggled to get going again.
"We had a few injuries during the match and couldn't find our feet for a while, but the last five minutes we went into overdrive [to score two tries] and I am proud of the effort."
Spies said the Pretoria outfit had worked hard during the week leading up to the clash, with possession and control a priority.
"We tried to control the ball and possession and wanted to finish off that pressure by turning it into points as much as we can, and we did that well tonight."
Man of the match Jan Serfontein was happy with his performance and is enjoying his time at the Bulls.
"The Bulls is a great place to be with great facilities and very happy with where I am, but Super Rugby is very tough and I am sure I will be a bit sore after this game," he said.
