Chiefs set on SBW comeback

Chiefs coach Dave Rennie is still confident that Sydney Rooster Sonny Bill Williams will make a return to the Chiefs in the not so distant future.

The former All Black made the commitment to the Rugby League side on a one-year deal but Rennie is hopeful that he will be back sooner rather than later.

"We're working pretty hard in that area and we are pretty confident we can maybe lure him back here at some stage," Rennie told AAP.

Williams also has the lure of the 2015 World Cup, and this is another reason why Rennie believes that he will make a return, not just to Rugby Union, but to the Chiefs.

"[With 2015] being a World Cup year, hopefully that will be attractive to him.

"If he comes back to New Zealand, he'll come to the Chiefs," Rennie said adamantly.

The Chiefs lose one of their most talismanic backs at the end of the Super Rugby season when Richard Kahui switches Hamilton for Japan.

This is a massive blow for the defending champions but regaining the services of Williams will provide them with a just as top-class replacement.

Rennie does hope to have the World Cup winner back in the Chiefs strip but is aware of the impact that he has had on the NRL, and understands that he could be there for a while.

"He made a real commitment to league and he might be there for a couple of years yet.

"There's no guarantees about that but he's certainly committed there this year," Rennie added.

The Chiefs mentor does not see dealing with Williams' controversial manager, Khoder Nasser, as an issue.

"Khoder was easy to work with despite what other people would say.

"I think we were up front with our expectations of Sonny, especially in and around the boxing, and so were they and I think everybody delivered.

"So it was a pretty easy marriage to be honest," he said.
