Crusaders go back to school

Fletcher takes up the role that has been held by Angus Gardiner for the last five seasons, with Gardiner moving into the General Manager professional rugby position.

Crusaders CEO Hamish Riach said Fletcher was an ideal candidate for the role, given his previous experience with Canterbury and the management and leadership experience he possesses.

"Shane [Fletcher] has fantastic rugby experience, having been involved as a player, coach and administrator for most of his life. He was a representative player for 56 first class games and has been coaching at various levels since 1992.

"Two years as team manager for the Canterbury provincial team gives him an excellent understanding of the role and means that he already has strong relationships with many of the new Crusaders coaching group.

"Add to that rugby experience the proven leadership skills he has as a principal or deputy principal for the last 16 years and we are fortunate to have somebody so well suited and qualified for the role," Riach said.

Crusaders head coach Scott Robertson said he was looking forward to working with Fletcher again.

"Fletch and I already know that we work well together as a head coach/team manager combination and that is a huge advantage heading into my first year in the Crusaders role. He is a great personality to have around and a reliable and effective leader, which is exactly what I was looking for in the Team Manager. We are excited to have him on board," Robertson said.

Fletcher mirrored Robertson's excitement, saying he could not wait to get his teeth into the new role.

"I loved working as the Canterbury team manager in 2014 and 2015, so when I heard that the Crusaders were appointing a new manager I knew immediately that I wanted to put my best foot forward.

"I am thrilled to be a part of the 2017 team and look forward to making a positive contribution," Fletcher said.
